If I have to get $25k worth of mediciation per year, which plan would be better for me? My HSA (member and children) with a deductible of $3,500/7,000 and annual OOP of $5,000/10,000 or the traditional PPO with $30 copay. The cost of the HSA is $873 and PPO is $1,376. MY employer will expense $16,512 annually ($1,376x12) regardless of the plan I choose. Thanks in advance for you help.

Kent,

Thank you for taking the time to write an in-depth account of the problems facing our health insurance choices today and the complex problems within the heathcare system. It isn't any wonder that most people (and employers) are very confused and frustrated about what to do.

For 2010, it is clear that both major carriers in the Rochester area will be steering people towards the HDHP with an HSA. (Most of the rest of the country already uses the HDHP with HSA's or HRA's).

We can most likely expect that the traditional HMO plans will again spike a double digit dollar increase, and for most, this will put those plans out of reach. EPO's and PPO's will also see large increases in premium.

In contrast, HDHP's will see an icrease in product offerings and premiums will stay more attractively priced.

Regards,

Jane

Kent,
You made a broad statement about having both an FSA and an HSA. Are you aware that the IRS rules state that if you have a HDHP with an HSA, then you can only have a limited purpose FSA, usually for vision and dental rembursements only?
